Product Details
Shellac Barretine White and Patent Knotting Solution. A knotting solution made from the finest Shellac. It is suitable for use as a wood knot sealer and for treating resinous areas of timber. Indoors and out.
A quick-drying Shellac in alcohol, which is applied over knots and resinous areas in wood prior to painting. This will stop the dreaded “bleed though” of knots overtime pulling through the paint work / finishes
White Shellac
Translucent, colourless knotting for use under oils, varnishes, and lighter coloured paints. Blocks naturally forming resins in wood being dissolved by the solvents in paints and seeping to the surface. This then discolours the paint finish. Ideal for modern paint finishes
Patent Shellac
Patent Knotting solution is recommend for darker finishes and traditional paints and finishes such as oil based. Prevents the resins naturally found in woods being dissolved by the solvents present in most paints and seeping to the top surface discolouring the paint finish.
Patent is NOT recommended to be used where water-based / lighter coloured modern paints are to be used
Size.| 200ml
Preparation
Ensure that all surfaces to be treated are clean, dry and free from dust, dirt or any other surface contaminants.
- Sand down thoroughly ready for priming, and ensure all sanding dust is removed
- Wood knots should be wiped with methylated spirit prior to applying Barrettine White Knotting solution
- If knots are exuding excessive resin, it is recommended to remove them and make good with a suitable wood filler
- clean up with Methylated Spirit after use
Application
Always do a test area before starting any project to confirm performance and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the bottle at all times.
- Apply one coat of wood knotting solution over and around all knots and resinous areas, working the solution in well, ensuring that all knots are properly sealed
- After a minimum of 30 minutes, a second coat must must be applied if subsequently finishing with a water-based coating and is also recommended for solvent-based coatings
- Allow final coat to dry for 1-2 hours before over-coating
Finishing
Once fully dry, Barrettine White Knotting is ready to be over-coated with a suitable wood oil, stain, paint or varnish finish.
Advisory - Test First
Translucent, colourless knotting for use under oils, varnishes, and lighter coloured paints, where the use of Patent Knotting may cause some ghosting. Some water-based products may not adhere to White Knotting. Compatibility should be checked on an off-cut before use.
